This website contains the archive catalogue for Islandshire Community Archive Group which consists of digitized images, documents and other historical material relating to the area covered by the Peregrini Project.
This was a Heritage Lottery funded project which documented the natural and built environment of Holy Island and the neighbouring mainland. The project set up a Community Archive Group which was overseen by the Berwick Archivist but will eventually be run by the volunteers. The archive is divided into three parts to reflect the different geographical areas of the project which have their own unique history.
Holy Island covers the island of Lindisfarne and the sea. It relates to the more recent history of the Island and not the period of the Priory and the monks. A home for the archive is being created on the Island and should be accessible in late 2018.
Cocklawburn covers the mainland area from Cocklawburn near Spittal to Fenham Mill. Its archives are kept in the Berwick Record Office based in Berwick-upon-Tweed. They can be accessed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Belford and Budle covers the area south of Fenham Mill, including Budle Bay and the village of Belford. Its archives are kept at Belford Museum which is open daily from 3 January to 21 December (winter hours 10 – 4 and summer hours 10 – 6). To consult the archives, an appointment must be made in advance. Please contact belfordmuseum@gmail.com
Most of these areas were formerly part of Norham and Islandshire which was a detached part of the County of Durham. They did not become part of Northumberland until 1844.
