A small piece of ground for use as a garden for his lifetime, together with the building and stone walls thereon, built by Whyte. Annual rent one peppercorn for the first 8 years and 5 shillings thereafter. It was situated in a field in the tenure of Richard Reavely. The field had been enclosed and allotted to the Marquis of Lothian on the Enclosure Award of 1793 and was later purchased by H.C. Selby. The piece of ground is now known as Gertrude Jekyll’s Garden.
