Travellers Tales
Accounts from visitors to Belford through the centuries.
Belford in 1909 and a visit to Lindisfarne
This account, by a ‘Peripatetic Parson’ appeared in the Church Times for 17 September 1909. It describes the Parson and his companion’s arrival in Belford, and the arrangements made to visit Lindisfarne. His account of his time on Lindisfarne appears on the Holy Island section of the Islandshire website.
Marmaduke Rawdon 1664
Marmaduke Rawdon's account of his 1664 visits to North Northumberland provide interesting insights into the state of both Alnwick and Belford, as well as the gullibility of travellers in unfamiliar surroundings.
The Cavalier
Edward Norgate, Charles I's Clerk to the Signet, travelled to Northumberland in May 1639. In this capacity he travelled to Northumberland and looking for the King, arrived in Belford. He was very unimpressed.
The Land Yacht 'The Wanderer' in Northumberland 1886
'The Wanderer' was the first specially designed touring caravan. It arrived in Belford in 1886. Remarkably the caravan has survived the last 130 years and has now been restored to its former glory, thanks to the Caravan and Motorhome Club based at The National Motor Museum Trust, Beaulieu.
